House Speaker Nancy Pelosi Gets Hair Done at COVID-Closed Salon

‘Blow dry for me but not for thee’

By Katy Grimes, September 1, 2020 5:28 pm

House Speaker Nancy Pelosi of California was caught on security cameras visiting a San Francisco hair salon Monday afternoon for a wash and blow-out, despite Gov. Gavin Newsom’s business lockdown orders, and local ordinances keeping hair and nail salons closed during the coronavirus pandemic, Fox News reported Tuesday.
“In security footage obtained by Fox News, and timestamped Monday at 3:08 p.m. Pacific Time, the California powerhouse is seen walking through eSalon in San Francisco with wet hair, and without a mask over her mouth or nose.”
I hope she paid the stylist in cash.
“I am so deflated because of the salon lockdowns, but this doesn’t surprise me — I am not aghast,” a Sacramento stylist told the California Globe. “Frankly, this is just so much more sad to me, than someone who is shocked… so hypocritical, but so typical.”
She said she has a friend who is also a stylist who has yet to receive an unemployment check from the EDD going back to March. “She’s not received one check… how are they making it?” she asked.
This salon owner said if one of her clients contracted COVID from her while she was “illegally working,” she was told she would have been fined $10,000.
“It’s a sad state of affairs – we’re totally screwed no matter what we do – feed our families, or starve our businesses.”
“I wish this exposure would blow Nancy’s hair back, but instead it will probably blow over,” she added. “And how disrespectful that she wasn’t wearing a mask – does she think that poorly of hair stylists?”
“This is bullshit,” California attorney Harmeet Dhillon Tweeted. “Every single woman in California knows EXACTLY where you can and cannot get your hair done. You think we are looking like this by choice?”

Several comments left on Dhillon’s Tweet expressed the frustration felt by most of California: “I can’t even… with the HYPOCRISY!!! Everyone should open up their business.”
Another said, “Different set of rules for the elites. And also a 2 tier justice system as well in this country. But yeah, let’s go ahead and fight each other, riot and submit and accept the hypocrisy.”
“It was a slap in the face that she went in, you know, that she feels that she can just go and get her stuff done while no one else can go in, and I can’t work,” San Francisco Salon owner Erica Kious told Fox News, adding that she “can’t believe” the speaker didn’t have a mask on.
Salons in San Francisco had been closed since March and were only notified they could reopen on Sept. 1 for outdoor hairstyling services only.
Notably, Nancy Pelosi is/was related to California Governor Gavin Newsom by marriage: Nancy Pelosi was like an aunt by marriage to Gavin Newson, as her brother-in-law (Pelosi) married Gavin Newsom’s aunt, Barbara, making her Gavin Newsom’s auntie – until they divorced.
Sacramento stylists have had to be creative. Some say they did lots of “garage haircuts.” Others did backyard haircuts. Some even traveled to clients’ homes, or invited people into their homes who were not worried about the virus. California Globe calls this “California’s Speakeasy economy.”
The Sacramento stylist said she was appalled at the statement Pelosi’s spokesman Drew Hammill gave to Fox, when he “maintained that the speaker was following the rules.”
“The speaker always wears a mask and complies with local COVID requirements,” he said.
Except when she doesn’t wear a mask at an illegal hair styling appointment.
“What she did proves the Democrats know the lockdown is a staged farce meant to hurt Americans and help Democrats win,” a friend commented.
“We were closed down for months, then opened for 6 weeks, then closed again for 6 weeks,” Sacramento Salon owner and stylist Chantel said in an interview. “I placed an $800 product order right before the last shutdown.”
Chantel has had some real business challenges, but expressed them articulately:
“This is all so crazy… get shutdown for 2.5 months, then reopen for 6 weeks, then shutdown again (effective immediately). Then we find out that we can reopen on August 31st which is 3 days after the official announcement. Is everyone keeping up with this this… this is the life of my industry. We all have kids and families and bills to pay. This is not ok. Most of us are still behind from the last shutdown. I’m sorry, I know I sound like a downer but this is what is happening. Everyone has someone who they go to for haircuts, coloring, you name it. Please give them some love – it’s been rough to say, at the least. 2020 can go now.”
Chantel said she heard last evening that another salon was permanently closing in Sacramento. “We’re struggling so hard to do the right thing,” Chantel said.
But she also said getting a call from Speaker Pelosi to wash and blow-out her hair is kind of a lose-lose situation. “When approached by a ‘Pelosi,’ it’s hard to say ‘no.'”
However, she said if any of the stylists in her salon wanted to come in and work, she would have said “no.”
“They just don’t know what it’s like for us,” Chantel added. “I’m glad she got busted.”
Another friend summed it up: “Blow dry for me but not for thee.”

Nancy Pelosi says salon owes her an apology for ‘set up’

Speaker Nancy Pelosi said she fell for a ‘set up’  by the salon where she was caught on camera having her hair done without wearing a face mask and added the salon owes her an apology.
Pelosi held a press conference in San Francisco to address her controversial visit after a report from Fox News revealed had visited the eSalon in her district on Monday for a wash and blow-out.
She was seen on the salon’s security footage walking around without a mask, an image that went viral on social media and resulted in her getting mocked by many people, including President Donald Trump.
‘I take responsibility for trusting the word of a neighborhood salon I’ve been to over the years many times, and when they said we’re able to accommodate people, one person at a time, and that we can set up that time, I trusted that. As it turns out, it was a setup,’ she said.
‘It was a set up, and I take responsibility for falling for a setup,’ she added.

Speaker Pelosi said ‘there’s more’ to the situation and it ‘was clearly a set up’

She then turned to blast the eSalon owners, saying they owe her an apology. And, she threatened, there could be more to the situation than the camera revealed.
”There’s more to this that I’m not going to ask to the motivation for a salon to say to me, ‘Yes, come in’ and then they go for me. It was clearly a set up,’ she said.
‘I think that this salon owes me an apology, for setting me up,’ she added.
And she said she wasn’t wearing a face mask because she just had her hair washed, asking the reporters questioning her if they wore a face mask when washing their hair.
‘I just had my hair washed. I don’t wear a mask when I’m washing my hair. Do you wear a mask when you’re washing your hair? I always wear a mask,’ she said. ‘And that picture is when I just came out of the bowl.’
San Francisco beauty parlors weren’t supposed to open until September 1, the day after the speaker had her treatment.

Speaker Pelosi defended herself for being seen without a face mask, saying she just had her hair washed
Additionally, the California Department of Public Health requires face masks to be worn in public indoor places. Those rules also including when a person is inline waiting to enter, riding public transportation, and working at many offices and other places. People are also supposed to wear masks when they are outdoors in public spaces if they are within 6 feet of others who are not members of their household.
Pelosi’s office hinted there was more to the story than originally appeared when the footage from inside the salon was revealed on Fox News.
Her Deputy Chief of Staff Drew Hammill said in a statement Tuesday that ‘the speaker always wears a mask and complies with local COVID requirements.’
He added that the speaker followed the rules as they were presented to her by the stylist.
‘This business offered for the speaker to come in on Monday and told her they were allowed by the city to have one customer at a time in the business,’ Hammill told Fox News. ‘The speaker complies with the rules as presented to her by this establishment.’
Her staff told CNN that the speaker has a regular stylist who typically goes to Pelosi’s house to do her hair. But that person was not available on Monday so referred Pelosi’s staff to a stylist at eSalon because it is where Pelosi’s regular stylist used to work.
Pelosi often wears a face mask when she is in the U.S. Capitol building in Washington D.C. She has also blasted President Trump for not wearing one in public more.
President Trump mocked her on Wednesday morning for her maskless hair treatment, joining many others who skewered the speaker on social media.
‘The Beauty Parlor owner must really dislike Crazy Nancy Pelosi. Turning her in, on tape, is a really big deal,’ Trump tweeted. ‘She probably treats him like she treats everyone else…And she strongly supported a Kennedy who just lost in, of all places, Massachusetts!’
His comments come after he hosted 1,500 supporters on the South Lawn of the White House for his address to the Republican National Convention. Many did not wear masks and there was little social distancing.

Fox News broke the story Tuesday that the House speaker had infuriated a salon owner for getting her hair done inside by one of the stylists who’s an independent contractor

Erica Kious, the owner of the eSalon, called Pelosi’s visit a ‘slap in the face that she went in, you know, that she feel that she can just go and get her stuff done while no one else can go in, and I can’t work.’
Kious also explained she rents out chairs to different stylists and one of the stylists took on Pelosi as a client when the speaker’s normal stylist was unavailable.
The stylist reached out to Kious Sunday night to ask to use the salon for the speaker.
‘I was like, are you kidding me right now? Do I let this happen? What do I do? Kious told Fox News, adding that she ‘can’t control’ what her individual stylists do.
‘We have been shut down for so long, not just me, but most of the small businesses and I just can’t – it’s a feeling – a feeling of being deflated, helpless and honestly beaten down,’ the salon owner said. ‘I have been fighting for six months for a business that took me 12 years to build to reopen. I am a single mom, I have two small children and I have no income.’
‘The fact that they did this, and she came in, it’s like a slap in the face,’ Kious added.

Salon owner denies Pelosi's 'setup' claims, says House Speaker 'owes the entire country an apology'

"If anyone set up Mrs. Pelosi, it could only have been the person she booked the appointment with," salon owner Erica Kious said.

Salon owner Erica Kious responds to comments made by Nancy Pelosi, denies the Speaker's claims of a 'set up'

Kious addresses the claims made by Speaker Nancy Pelosi, as well as those of the hair stylist Speaker Pelosi interacted with during her visit.
The owner of the San Francisco salon Nancy Pelosi
visited in violation of coronavirus restrictions blasted the House Speaker in an emotional online news conference Thursday, even as protesters gathered outside the Democrat's mansion and hung hair dryers and curling irons from a tree.

Erica Kious fought back tears as she denied Pelosi’s claim the incident at E SalonSF was a setup, a charge the speaker leveled after the secret style session was first reported by Fox News Tuesday. Surveillance video images obtained by Fox News showed the 80-year-old Pelosi roaming the salon maskless in a bathrobe, even though salons had been unable to open to the public since March due to the pandemic.
“For the Speaker of the House to go on TV and falsely claim she was set up and publicly defame me, and sent out PR firms ... in support of the Speaker’s own lies is bad enough," Kious said. "But for Speaker Pelosi to frame herself as a victim under a totally false narrative while small businesses and workers all over California – the state she represents in Congress – suffer and struggle just to survive is beyond shameful."
Kious, who says she received threats after the disclosure, was especially angered over Pelosi's claim that it was she who was owed an apology for being "set up."
"I don’t owe anyone an apology," Kious said. "Mrs. Pelosi owes the entire country an apology. If America goes in front of Congress and lies, they go to jail. But apparently, when the most powerful woman in the world lies to America, we owe her an apology."
Meanwhile, protesters were gathering outside Pelosi's mansion in the posh Pacific Heights section, where they hung blowdryers and hair curlers from a tree.

The San Francisco Chronicle’s Jessica Christian, said the demonstrators described themselves as “angry salon customers who want to get their hair and nails done.”
One of several video clips Christian posted on Twitter shows the protesters forming a hand-holding circle near the tree they “decorated” with tools of the beauty trade and an American flag.

Kious told Fox News Wednesday that she rents chairs to stylists, and one of them informed her in advance that Pelosi wanted a wash and blow-dry. California guidelines on salons vary by county, but stringent San Francisco officials have not yet permitted indoor salons to open. As of Sept. 1, they were able to provide outdoor service.
Kious said she considered Pelosi getting her hair done "a slap in the face" to struggling business owners.

Pelosi has been defiant and refused to accept responsibility for getting the illicit VIP treatment.
"I take responsibility for trusting the word of a neighborhood salon that I've been to over the years many times, and that when they said ... we're able to accommodate people, one person at a time, and that we can set up that time, I trusted that," Pelosi told reporters Wednesday. "As it turns out, it was a set-up."
"I take responsibility for falling for a setup," she said.

Pelosi said Wednesday she would not answer any more questions about the visit and asked at one point whether reporters had any questions "about the fact that people are dying," referring to the HEROES Act legislation she called the news conference to address.
A reporter asked why she was not wearing a mask in the brief clip.

"I just had my hair washed. I don't wear a mask when I'm washing my hair. Do you wear a mask when you're washing your hair? I always have a mask," Pelosi said.

Matthew Soleimanpour, an attorney for Jonathan DeNardo, who did Pelosi's hair, said his client received permission from the salon owner a day earlier to make the appointment.

"It appears Ms. Kious is furthering a setup of Speaker Pelosi for her own vain aspirations," Soleimanpour said in a statement.

Kious denied staging the

“If anyone set up Mrs. Pelosi, it could only have been the person she booked the appointment with, Jonathan DeNardo,” Kious said. “Obviously this makes no sense. I am confident that Jonathan did nothing to set up Mrs. Pelosi. In fact, nobody set up Mrs. Pelosi. She is attempting to scapegoat her stylist Jonathan – a big fan of hers – and me, a small business owner who has had no interactions with her about any of this.”
